California rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers have revealed the details of their upcoming 2022 world tour, which will feature guests such as The Strokes, A$AP Rocky, Beck, HAIM, St. Vincent, Anderson, Paak and The Free Nationals, as well as Thundercat and King Princess slated to open on some select dates.
The tour will commence with an EU/UK leg, kicking off with a show at Estadio La Cartuja De Sevilla in Seville, Spain on Saturday, June 4th, followed by four UK shows in Manchester, London, Dublin and Glasgow later on. Following their European leg, the band are heading out across the United States and Canada on July 23rd and will tour nineteen cities. This will be the band’s first-ever headlining stadium tour, and it will feature music spanning their entire catalogue, including brand new songs from their upcoming twelfth album.
As stated in a press release, the tour marks the return of guitarist and “all round cosmic musician” John Frusciante, who originally left the band in July of 2009, and was replaced by Josh Klinghoffer. Klinghoffer made two albums with the group; I’m With You (2011) and The Getaway (2016). Klinghoffer departed Red Hot Chili Peppers in December of 2019, and the band announced via Instagram that Frusciante was re-joining the band. Klinghoffer stated that there was no animosity between himself and the rest of the group, saying; “It’s absolutely John’s place to be in the band… I’m happy he’s back with them.”
Whilst this new tour is considered to be Frusciante’s “official” return to the group, he did perform with Red Hot Chili Peppers at a memorial service held by the Tony Hawk Foundation for film producer Andrew Burke, on February 8th, 2020. This performance was his first with the band in thirteen years.
