It’s been a month since Charli XCX promised a new release. On her birthday, 2nd of August she shared the due date on her social media: “my new song Good Ones arrives on September 2nd. get ready to surrender, happy birthday to me“.
Today her Twitter is buzzing with the positive response to the new mega-pop banger “Good Ones” accompanied by a dramatic, goth, dance video.
The singer said in a statement: “Today, I, the inimitable Charli XCX, am releasing a brand new single ‘Good Ones’, accompanied by a twisted, dramatic and quite frankly electrifying music video“. In a video, we can see Charli perform a dance routine at the funeral ceremony. Watch the video below:
The visuals for “Good Ones” was produced by Oscar Holter of Max Martin’s Wolf Cousins and directed by Hannah Lux Davis. It was filmed in Mexico. Charli XCX commented on it marks the first single of a “new chapter” that “embraces all that my life has to offer in today’s world – fame, glamour, inner demons and global hits“. She explains in a statement: “The video sees me dramatically mourning the untimely loss of my partner as I battle with the realisation that once again I’ve abandoned the goodness in my life, in favour of the sinister, with a visual aesthetic that marks a new era of me: Charli XCX“.
She added that the song is about her inability to stay in healthy relationships and being drawn to toxic ones. The “Good Ones” can be streamed and purchased here.
Recently the singer posted an image of a headstone with the date of 18th March 2022. It might be a tease of the release date of her new, fifth album. Nothing has been confirmed yet. That would mark her final record under contract with Waner. Charli XCX told Refinery29: “I’m exploring what it means to be a pop star on a major label in a not very current way. And that’s really fun to me”.
