Morrissey is ‘seriously considering’ running for Mayor of London, he has announced in a blog post on his fan site True To You.
In the post he claims to have been invited to run as the London Mayoral candidate for the Animal Welfare Party in the upcoming 2016 London Mayoral Elections. If the ex-Smiths singer and staunch animal rights activist gets the 330 signatures of support required to enter the race then we could be seeing him in contention for the mayor’s office with Labour’s Sadiq Khan and the Conservative’s Zac Goldsmith.
Morrissey claimed that “Animal welfare groups cannot persist simply in order to continue to persist.” He went on to say that: “There must be a governmental voice against the hellish and archaic social injustice allotted to animals in the United Kingdom simply because those animals do not speak English […] we cannot just sit around waiting for establishment enlightenment.”
In his statement the Meat is Murder songwriter wielded his typically strong rhetoric when discussing the imperative to embrace veganism. Some choice cuts include him saying: “if you are a part of the milk-drinking population, then you condone systems of torture”, and that “If animal serial killer Jamie Oliver feels so passionate about including ‘kid meat’ (young goat) into the human diet, would he consider putting forth one of his own kids (children) for general consumption?” You can read his full statement here.
If Morrissey is successful in becoming mayor, he will follow Boris Johnson, who has been Mayor for two terms since 2008. The London mayoral election will take place on May 5th 2016.
