French electronic ensemble M83 already have six albums under their belt, as well as a Grammy nomination for 2011 album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, which propelled them into the charts. They have recently responded to rumours of new material with the announcement that they are due to release a seventh album this coming April, entitled Junk. Last night frontman and M83 powerhouse Anthony Gonzalez gave BBC Radio 1 listeners an exclusive chance to hear upcoming single Do It, Try It, which is now streaming on the BBC Radio 1 website. You can listen to it here!
Gonzalez has revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the new album was inspired by 70’s and 80’s TV shows, and that it is “quite different and “very epic”.
I feel like TV shows are starting to look and sound the same. There’s no more passion anymore, so this album is a tribute to those old fashioned shows.
M83’s most recent album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming reached number one on the Electronic & Dance Albums chart, and Gonzalez has also spoken of not feeling daunted by the task of trying to top the band’s last album, saying during his interview on BBC Radio 1:
It’s difficult. It was my most successful album and because of that I didn’t feel any pressure because I just told myself, well, you had an amazing success with the previous album so now you can do whatever you wanna do so just experiment and have fun with your music and just put it out.
M83 made headlines back in 2011 by posting a public invitation to open auditions for a multi instrumentalist to join them following keyboardist Morgan Kibby’s departure, a position taken up by Jordan Lawlor – who toured with the band to support Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, however Junk will be his first inclusion on an M83 album.
Junk will be available from 8th April 2016.
