The annual Billboard Music Awards took place at Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles last night. It was broadcast live from NBC and was hosted by Nick Jonas, who also closed the show with Jonas Brothers. The event was held outdoors, with a limited number of audience members who were required to wear masks.
Many groups and solo artists performed at the event, such as AJR, Alicia Keys, Karol G, The Weeknd and P!nk. Some artists delivered their performances remotely, such as BTS with their new single ‘Butter’. Among them included the Oxford-based rock band Glass Animals who delivered a live colourful performance of their hit single ‘Heat Waves’. This is the second time that Glass Animals have been a finalist at Billboard Music Awards, in the top rock album category to be specific, and the first time performing at the event.
Duran Duran, the Birmingham-based new wave band also performed at the Billboard Music Awards last night. They teamed up with Blur’s guitarist Graham Coxon to deliver a powerful performance of their new single ‘Invisible’ remotely from London. The track is taken from their upcoming album ‘Future Past’ due to be released this October, which marks their first album announcement in six years. Duran Duran also performed classics ‘Notorious’ and ‘Hungry Like the Wolf’ for fans.
The Weeknd took home the most amount of awards with a total of ten, including top artist and top male artist. Pop Smoke won five, and BTS and Bad Bunny both won four awards. Dua Lipa was nominated for top female, top hot 100 and top radio songs artist and her song ‘Don’t Start Now’ was nominated for top radio song. Harry Styles was also nominated for top radio songs artist and his single ‘Adore You’ was nominated for top radio song.
