“GoGo Penguin have been hailed as the Radiohead of British jazz, but they draw equally on rock, jazz and minimalist influences, alongside the intricacy of Aphex Twin and Four Tet to create their punchy, experimental but always beautiful music”, a vast number of genre and artist influences as listed in their Spotify bio creates the perfect foundation for a remix album of the nu-jazz powerhouse.
After the band featuring pianist Chris Illingworth, bassist Nick Blacka, and drummer Rob Turner obtained notoriety after their Mercury Prize success, they have been building up their relations and collaboration with a handful of artists across all genres, as displayed in this new remix album titled ‘GGP/RMX’. The Manchester band have tapped a star studded roster of artists to tackle songs from their previous self-titled album from 2020. The eleven track affair sees remixes from ten different GoGo Penguin songs from artists all across the globe.
Artists involved in the project include Japanese experimental pop artist Cornelius, dancefloor heavyweight and IAMSIAM record label owner Machinedrum, electronic and nature infused musician Yosi Horikawa, French producer Rone, experimental drum & bass legend Squarepusher, British tech-house artist Nathan Fake, 80s dance hitmakers 808 State, electronic musician James Holden, multi-instrumentalist and producer Shunya, renowned British producer Clark and closing out with fellow British jazz group Portico Quartet.
