Glastonbury is regarded as an essential pilgrimage for avid festival fans in the UK, with a colourful reputation for all things stereotypically associated with the music festival experience: muddy fields, questionable toilet facilities and above all, a collection of big names from a wide range of musical genres that make for a weekend of fun, festivities and world class live music. Speculation regarding this year’s line up has been met with the first announcement that Coldplay will be headlining the Sunday night slot.
Coldplay are fast becoming Glastonbury veterans, with this year’s stint to make them the first band ever to headline the festival four times, having also done so in 2002, 2005 and 2011. The festival, held at Worthy Farm (Somerset), will commence on Thursday 23rd June and finish on Sunday 26th June, and tickets for the event on the official website have already sold out following their release in October 2015, however a second wave of tickets are expected to become available in Spring due to returns and cancellations. The current face value pricing stands at £228 for weekend tickets plus a £5 booking fee.
Their Glastonbury slot will be Coldplay’s only festival appearance this year – however the band are due to play stadium shows worldwide promoting their latest album A Head Full Of Dreams, including dates in Glasgow, London and Manchester. A Head Full Of Dreams has proven to be a success, hitting the number one spot in over 90 countries, and the recently announced Glastonbury headline slot adds to the rapidly growing list of this year’s commendations for Coldplay, with the band having already received NME’s Godlike Genius Award and performed at the Super Bowl Halftime Show – with an additional Brit Awards appearance scheduled for next week, carrying nominations for Best British Group and Best Album.
