Singer-songwriter, YouTuber and author dodie has released her first album called ‘Build a Problem’. Singles released prior to the album include ‘Cool Girl’, ‘Rainbow’ and ‘I Kissed Someone (It Wasn’t You)’, which had an accompanying music video that premiered on 21st April on her YouTube channel. Most of the tracks were written in 2019, but dodie said that she wrote more over quarantine.
Though dodie has previously released original songs on her YouTube channel since 2011 and released three EPs – ‘Intertwined’ in 2016, ‘You’ in 2017 and ‘Human’ in 2019 - ‘Build a Problem’ is her first full-length album. It was originally due to be released on 5th March but has been delayed multiple times due to issues regarding the Covid-19 pandemic and Brexit.
The singer had this to say about the new album: “I was writing a lot of quiet, introspective indie songs. But I was also trying to balance writing pop songs for the stage, for shows. It was a real conflict around the time of my last EP. But then I realized I could do both and I love doing both. So, this album is an amalgamation.”
She added: “I gave the opportunity to myself to really pull out the big guns and show everyone what I can do. The opportunity to score all of those string parts and build that intensity was so fun. I sing very quietly. I was never allowed to be loud. But I knew I had that drama in me.”
With an impressive 1.95 million subscribers on YouTube, dodie has amassed a huge following on YouTube prior to the album release. In 2017, she won YouTube musician category at the Shorty Awards and also released an autobiographical book ‘Secrets for the Mad: Obsessions, Confessions and Life Lessons’, where she was nominated for Book of the Year at Summer in the City Awards.
