The collection has youthful touches throughout, with pieces designed by the 26-year-old singer himself, which has been infused with Barbour International’s classic style. There is a wide range of products available, including T-shirts, jackets, hats, trousers and sweatshirts. The singer has said that his personal favourite from the collection is the embroidered tee as “the Seagull piece feels so personal. I wanted a seagull that looked like it’s from Shields nicking an ice cream. I feel like that embodies where I’m from in a humorous way.”
In a Q&A, Fender said that Barbour has always been a special brand for him: “When I was skint living at my Mams I didn’t have many clothes and I used to have patched up trash jeans. At the time my mate Paul – (who was older than me and used to run buskers nights) gave me one of his Barbour jackets – he had two and he said: “this one looks good on you”. I always think back to getting that coat when I was a kid from my mate, it meant a lot to me. I’ve had a soft spot for Barbour ever since.”
When asked about the unusualness of this collection due to its particularly vibrant colour schemes, Head of Clothing Andy McMillan said: “Sam was keen to have a nod to his beloved Newcastle United. So looking at his favourite kits he highlighted the classic away strip from the 95/96 season worn by the legend David Ginola. The colours used (Aubergine & Navy) formed the base of the colour palette, then we lighted the range adding off white and light pink.”
Sam Fender was named one of the BBC’s Sound of 2018 and is currently signed to Polydor Records. He released his debut EP ‘Dead Boys’ in 2018 and album ‘Hypersonic Missiles’ in 2019, which went to number one in the UK Albums Chart. In 2019, he won the Rising Star Award at the Brits and was nominated for Breakthrough Artist in 2020.
