Stormzy has launched a campaign to see his single ‘Shut Up’ become Christmas number one, with the hashtag #ShutUpForXMasNo1 trending on twitter this morning.
The grime MC took to the global stage during the sensational British heavyweight title fight between Anthony Joshua and Dylan Whyte, performing ‘Shut Up’ for Anthony Joshua entrance. After Joshua defeated Whyte in the seventh round, sales of Stormzy’s single surged, making it number 8 on the iTunes singles chart. You can watch Stormzy performing from the boxing ring below:
With the momentum in sales following the fight Stormzy tweeted: “Nah fuck this #ShutUpForXMasNo1 LET’S DO THIS BUN X FACTOR!!!” Now, what started life as a lo fi video of Stormzy freestyling over DJ XTC’s ‘Functions on the Low’ (one of Grime’s truly classic instrumentals) in a south London car park, now has a genuine chance of taking the number one spot for Christmas 2015.
If you like your Christmas anthems sans sleigh-bells and snow or anything Xmas related for that matter, or if you’re just tired of X Factor winners dominating the festive charts and want to tell Simon Cowell to ‘Shut Up’, then go here. While we wait for the Christmas No. 1 to be announced though, why don’t you re-watch the original video of ‘Shut Up’ below:
