The nominations for the 58th Grammy Awards are in, with Kendrick Lamar dominating nominations. He is tipped for 11 awards at the prestigious awards evening. The Weeknd and Taylor Swift’s tallies follow shortly after, with both artists racking up seven nominations each. Ed Sheeran and James Bay lead the charge for UK artists, with two nominations apiece.
Compton rapper Kendrick Lamar has made the top spot on nearly every critics ‘best albums of the year’ lists with his phenomenal To Pimp A Butterfly. The album, which was released at the beginning of the year, won universal acclaim for it’s hyper-aware lyrics, complex themes and daring production. It’s no surprise then that To Pimp A Butterfly is up for best album, along with two songs from the album up for five more awards. ‘These Walls’ is up for best collaboration, whilst Alright is tipped for a staggering four awards: best song, best rap performance, best rap song and best music video.
Another good year for Taylor Swift, her nominations include best record and best album. Bad Blood is also up for best music video and best pop duo/group performance with Kendrick Lamar.
R&B Singer The Weeknd, whose tally equals Swift’s, is also up for best album, and best record for his infectious pop hit ‘Can’t Feel My Face’. Drake’s tally closely follows The Weeknd and Swifts, with five nominations under his belt; his surprise mixtape If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late is up for best album.
On the UK side Ed Sheeran, who has seen a big year, has two nominations for his ballad ‘Thinking Out Loud” – song of the year and record of the year. Meanwhile James Bay has been nominated for best new artist and best rock album for his Chaos and the Calm.
