During the Black Friday stock sales of Record Store Day exclusives, world-renowned Pink Floyd released a limited edition six-song EP on the downlow, titled 1965 – Their First Recordings (via NME). The collection of never heard before recordings features Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Richard Wright alongside their fellow guitarist at the time Rado Klose. In fact, the six songs on the EP were recorded when the band from London were still known under name such as Sigma 6 and the Abdabs.
On Monday, Pink Floyd confirmed that the EP was an official release stating: “To mark 50 years since the tracks were recorded, Pink Floyd have released a limited edition set of two seven-inch singles containing the band’s first recordings.” If you missed out on your chance to get one of the 1,000-copy EP’s – which features a cover design inspired by a photo by Hipgnosis Creative Director Aubrey Powell – then don’t worry because the band promised that they “hope to make them available in some physical form towards the end of next year.”
The R&B infused recordings feature four Barrett originals (“Remember Me,” “Lucy Leave,” “Double O Bo” and “Butterfly”) as well as “Walk With Me Sydney,” one of Waters’ earliest compositions. The original analogue tapes were mastered by Andy Jackson of Tube Mastering and Ray Staff of AIR studios, together they managed to master the tracks from 1965 to be sharp-sounding and smooth.
Due to United Kingdom Copyright laws, the 50-year copyright on the six tracks are in danger of expiring, this is why 1965 – Their First Recordings was most likely released – in an effort to extend the copyright of the tracks.
