dodie has released her newest single Rainbow, from her upcoming album Build a Problem. dodie took to Instagram to explain that Rainbow is one of six songs on the album that are tied together by a 13-piece string section that she composed herself.
She also thanked the musicians saying; “so grateful to @willharvey1 for knowing p much every string player in London ahahah – curating the most beaaautiful selection of musicians and for being my mentor in arranging!!! thank u to said gorgeous players for bearing with my terrible conducting skills and adding their souls and skill to each part.”
Rainbow originally appeared on dodie’s YouTube channel two years ago, where she has 1.94 million subscribers. It was a very different song back then, with just dodie and her guitar in her bedroom compared to what it is now, but the meaning remains the same. dodie explained the meaning in the video description saying; “this is a song I wrote around the shame lgbtq+ people go through, and therefore the importance of “pride” and the rainbow and flags etc and just how needed and helpful it all is to combat that feeling.”
This is the second single from her upcoming album Build a Problem. Cool Girl came out on the 19th of October after being featured as Annie Mac’s Hottest Record. The intimate track tells the story of how we sometimes make ourselves smaller in order to fit into people’s perceptions of how we should be. The song was actually a last-minute addition to the album, dodie wrote the song over lockdown and recorded it once the restrictions lifted, which makes it a surprisingly perfect first single off of the album.
Rainbow is out now on all platforms; you can listen to it below. Build a Problem will be out on March 5th.
