Prince has confirmed he will be touring Europe in just two weeks, making stops in three UK cities.
The ‘Spotlight… Piano and a Microphone’ tour will involve just that, with the singer playing the shows with just a piano on stage. The tour was announced at a press conference with a small number of European music writers at Prince’s Paisley Park studios in Minnesota over the weekend.
During the Conference Prince elaborated on why he was choosing to play such striped back shows, saying: “Why do this now? For several reasons. For starters it is a challenge. I rarely get bad reviews because this is something that’s been perfected for over 30 years. You have to try new things. With the piano it is more naked, more pure. You can see exactly what you get.”
Although Prince telling a small number of European music writers in Minnesota about a tour happening in two weeks is pretty long term notice. For Prince’s 2013 ‘Hit And Run’ tour a lot of the announcements were made just 24 hours in advance, with tickets selling for as little as £10.
Initially the cities for the UK leg of the ‘Spotlight…’ tour included Liverpool, but Gigs & Tours is listing six shows at Glasgow, London and Birmingham only, with Prince playing a matinee and then evening show at each. The dates for the UK shows can be found below:
29/11 London, Theatre Royal
01/12 Birmingham, Symphony Hall
