Legendary Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards has released a new video for his solo track Hate It When You Leave ahead of Record Store Day, this Saturday 24th October. The song originally featured as an album track on his 1992 LP Main Offender; a record which enjoyed modest chart success in the UK (reaching #45 in the album charts), but spawned two top 20 singles on the US Mainstream Rock Chart (Wicked As It Seems and Eileen).
The new video, directed by Richards’ son-in-law Jacques Naudé, is a sun-drenched love letter to blue collar America. It also features a cameo from Richards himself; with the iconic rocker taking shelter on his patio while sporting a trademark devilish grin. The Dartford-born cult hero has described the promo as “something for your ears and eyes and for your hearts.”
The video precedes the re-release of Hate It When You Leave as a limited edition red vinyl 7 inch on 24th October – the last of three staggered, socially-distanced Record Store Days this year. The vinyl release will also feature a rare cover of Key To The Highway, a blues standard dating back to the 1940s, which had only previously surfaced on the Japanese version of Main Offender. Speaking to Total Rock earlier this year, Richards said “Thank God record stores still exist! They should be cherished.”
The new Keith Richards video caps a surprisingly busy lockdown year for the Rolling Stones. In April they dropped a new single in Living In A Ghost Town, a reggae-blues fusion which topped the charts in Germany – making them the oldest artists to secure a German number one, and securing their first chart-topper in the country since 1968 classic Jumping Jack Flash in the process.
That single was followed-up by a re-issue of their 1973 track Scarlet, featuring Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page. The re-release was accompanied by a socially-distanced promo video featuring Normal People star Paul Mescal.
Next month fans will be able to get their hands on a Keith Richards & The X-Pensive Winos LP-DVD-book deluxe set featuring the spin-off group’s live show 1988 live show at Hollywood’s Palladium theatre.

This summer the Stones had also been due to complete the remaining North American dates of their mammoth worldwide No Filter tour, which began in Hamburg in 2017 and took in lucrative UK dates in Cardiff, London, Edinburgh, Coventry, Southampton and Manchester the following year. With the final 14 dates in Canada and the USA postponed indefinitely due to Covid-19, the rock ‘n’ roll titans may now be casting an eye to 2022 – and the 60th anniversary of their formation in London. In a recent interview, Richards told Rolling Stone magazine that the anniversary “will be something to look forward to” for the quartet – dryly adding “I hope we’re all there, man.”
