In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Albarn disclosed that Gorillaz’s new upcoming album (due for release in 2016) will be a much faster paced album than previous works.
Albarn had this to say on the new album:
“I’m in the very early days on a new Gorillaz record. So far, it’s really fast, and it’s got quite a lot of energy. I’ve been stuck on piano, somewhere off Broadway, for years now. I want to go somewhere completely opposite of that.”
The so far untitled new album will be Gorillaz’s first release since ‘The Fall’ in 2011. ‘The Fall’ was a curious album in itself as it was more of an experimental album and was interestingly enough released for free on Gorillaz’s website.
Despite Albarn discussing the upcoming album, he also said that it was still very much in the ‘early stages’ of creating it. This is understandable as Albarn is currently on tour with Blur. However this tour will be ending later this month on the 23rd October in New York. So we can expect the rest of this year and the start of 2016 to be dedicated to putting out a new album. As fellow Gorillaz co-founder Jamie Hewlett said when speaking to NME:
“We’re doing Gorillaz next year, Damon has started making some music around all his other projects. I’m working on it at the moment and 2016 is going to be Gorillaz all year.”
The new album promises to continue Gorillaz’s trend of having a wide range of collaborating artists featuring on the release. Gorillaz have previously had esteemed musicians such as Lou Reed, Snoop Dog, De La Soul and many more.
