Bastille have released their newest song Survivin along with a lyric video. Frontman of the band, Dan Smith wrote the song to reflect on the anxiety and self-doubt he has experienced, he has spoken about the song’s meaning, explaining; “There’d been times when I felt like I’d been in a washing machine and on a conveyor belt at the same time, but when people asked me how I was doing, the answer was always the British cliché: ‘Yep, all good, fine.'”
He went on to say; “At the start of lockdown I felt very self-conscious about having written a song that felt relevant when it wasn’t intended to be, but then I also think 2020 is the year we all stopped pretending everything’s fine.”
Fans are loving the new song, taking to the comments of the lyric video, one user said; “Once again, another example of ‘Bastille cannot make a bad song.'” Other fans really related to the meaning of the song, thanking the band for speaking out about mental illness, one fan commented saying; “There’s not one bad Bastille song. NOT ONE. I struggle a lot with depression and anxiety and this song literally made me cry. I’m so grateful to have found such an amazing band.”
This is the band’s first release since their collaboration last month with Graham Coxon for their song What You Gonna Do??? When releasing this song, the band announced this would be a new era for the band’s sound, saying they wanted to tear up their process, be spontaneous and start again. They went on to say: “We’re just really excited by the new songs. I think we’re making some of the best music we’ve ever made. We want to put it out now and not wait for the whole album to be done before anyone starts to hear it. This is about where we are now and hearing us in real-time.”
