As the country slowly trudges its way back to (the new) normal, Thom Yorke has provided us with yet another great playlist to assuage our lockdown blues. In partnership with Sonos Radio – a set of ‘stations’ available to those who own Sonos branded sound systems – the Radiohead frontman has curated a second mix for his In the Absence Thereof… series, having shared the first at the end of May. If you don’t happen to own a pair of Sonos speakers don’t fret; the two playlists have been made available to stream (listen to his newest below).
Functioning as an “ever-rolling compilation” in his words, Yorke describes his station as comprising of music “that fascinates or moves me, what obsesses me, challenges me, opens new doors, reminds me of what I might have forgotten, is insanely complex or elegantly simple, violent, messy, heavy or light. Whatever has hit me over the head basically”.

The 20-song tracklist features music as far reaching as Frank Sinatra, Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon, and the late composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, closing out with JPEGMAFIA’s “Papi I Missed U” from 2019’s All My Heroes Are Cornballs. Incidentally, JPEGMAFIA is one several high profile artists to contribute his own mix to Sonos, alongside Phoebe Bridgers, Angel Olsen, and David Byrne.
Back in April, Yorke debuted a new song “Plasticine Figures” from home on Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show having released his third solo album ANIMA last year. He was set to embark on a worldwide tour this summer accompanied by longtime Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich and audiovisual artist Tarik Barri, though events have been rescheduled to 2021.
