Doncaster’s very own rockstar Yungblud revealed first information about his upcoming sophomore album. The 22-year-old is spending lockdown in an Airbnb in LA with his manager, photographer and his guitarist. He recently released his new single Weird! which was written during lockdown, during the “weirdest time in my life”, and it is the perfect soundtrack to the strange situation the world is currently experiencing.
Yungblud’s second album is going to be very different from his debut album 21st Century Liability. In a heart-to-heart interview with Kerrang! he admits that he’s “not angry anymore.” Talking about his first album he says that “21st Century Liability was so fucking angry, but that’s not who I am now.” But he also assures that “that’s not to say that the new album is me going soft, because there are some fucking ragers and songs for the moshers on there, but this is going to be a record of optimism.” He agrees that the difference between the two albums is like the sophomore album being the antithesis to his debut record.
Yungblud, who’s real name is Dominic Harrison, describes the upcoming record as “a neat whisky, uncensored version of my life: it talks about liberation in terms of sex, my identity and my mental health, as well as love, heartbreak, self-harm, suicide, depression… it’s like a series of Skins.” He added that he wants the new album to be “naïve and full of contradictions.” The album is inspired by his community, to whom he talks to on FaceTime monthly. He needs his fans, who refer to themselves as the “black hearts club”, as much as they need him. “Those people make me feel like it’s alright to be alive – I’m still around because of them”, he confesses. And so it felt only right to get inspired by those who helped him the most. “This record doesn’t give a fuck what people think about it, because it’s telling the listener what life is truly about”, Dom says, before he reveals that the album is dedicated to his fans: “I have a dialogue with my fanbase that allows us to say what we think – we’re rebelling against the idea that speaking our minds is wrong.”
Yungblud recently had to postpone his UK tour which was supposed to kick off this month, but fans can still be excited to get new content from their idol as his sophomore album is due to be released in August. His new record is going to show that he’s no longer a 21st century liability but the the beloved “weirdo” of this generation.
