Sam Smith has joined a group of artists who have delayed the release of their new albums. The singer decided to push back the upcoming album, previously titled ‘To Die For‘, which was set to drop on May 1, as they deemed both the album’s release date and title did not “feel right” in the midst of the global pandemic of COVID-19.
Smith, who came out as non-binary and genderqueer last year and preferred the gender-neutral pronouns ‘they/them’, took to their social media to announce the postponement and renaming of the third LP. “I have done a lot of thinking the last few weeks and feel that the title of my album and imminent release doesn’t feel right,” wrote Smith. The 27-year-old singer/songwriter, however, did not confirm the new date for the release as well as the new title. The “Money on My Mind” also promised that the album would be dropped within this year and planned to share new music in the next few months.
‘To Die For‘ had been scheduled to hit the market on May 1 (via Capital). Due to the widespread of coronavirus, Smith postponed the album to June 2020, but since the situation has not been better, now the singer agreed to delay the release until he finds the right time to do so.
The now-untitled project is a follow-up to 2017’s gospel-driven record ‘The Thrill of It All‘. This upcoming album saw Smith reimagining their musical persona into an electropop-leaning side. Normani-assisted single “Dancing with a Stranger” was the first single introducing the music scene with a whole new Sam Smith vibe. It became highly successful on music charts both inside and outside the UK.
“How Do You Sleep?” is the second single off the project. It was received with positive feedback thanks to Smith’s fresh and dancey self-reinvention. Then, they dropped a cover of Donna Summer’s disco classic “I Feel Love” to continue the hype of their new album.
Back in February, the “Stay with Me” crooner dropped “To Die For”, the latest cut from the project. The track is a heartfelt ballad that brings all fans to the original Sam Smith that made them fall in love in the first place.
The Grammy-winning singer has become the most recent artist who pushes back the release of new music. Earlier, A-listed pop star Lady Gaga announced the postponement of her sixth LP ‘Chromatica‘; meanwhile, indie acts like HAIM and Declan McKenna are also affected by the outbreak about their decision to release their new albums.
