Last Saturday night, Harry Styles hosted Saturday Night Live, one of the hugest American late-night TV variety show. Apart from hosting the show for the first time, the 25-year-old singer was also a musical guest.
SNL has continued its 45th season, with Harry Styles, the former member of the global phenomenal boy band One Direction, as both the host and musical guest on Episode 6 on November 16. Styles also debuted the first ever live performance of his new music from the upcoming album ‘Fine Line’ with two new songs, ‘Lights Up’ and ‘Watermelon Sugar’. Both songs retain the English singer’s ’70s rock sound but are filled with upbeat vibes, an impressive departure from his 2017’s sentimental hit ‘Sign of the Times’.
As an SNL tradition, the modern rock star delivered a giggle-inducing monologue that took a jab at himself while also reminiscing his good old times in a band with his mates.
“Now, I don’t if you’ve heard but I’m not in a boy band anymore. I’m in a man band now. I used to be in a band called One Direction,” Styles spoke of him outgrowing the teen image he was stuck to when in the band.
He also mentioned his bandmates in the monologue, “How crazy would it be if they were here tonight? Well, they’re not here. But I love those guys. They’re my brothers: Niall, Liam, Louis, and err oh, Ringo. Yeah, that’s it.” The lines seem to be a shade to the infamous departure of Zayn Malik, the first member to leave One Direction in 2015. However, the Directioners—the One Direction fans—are delighted to see the singer shouted out to the other members, confirming his solid friendships with his mates.

Harry Styles also premiered live performance of his two new singles ‘Lights Up’ and ‘Watermelon Sugar’ in the episode. ‘Lights Up’ was performed in a stripped-down version with big-band instruments; meanwhile, the other song was executed in a more playful mood. Both performances proved Styles’ progress as a songwriter and capabilities as an artist.
