The British-Ivorian afrowave pioneer, Afro B calls upon French Montana to feature on the remix to his 2018 hit single ‘Joanna (Drogba)’.
Revisiting the Team Salut produced beat, the remix features the jumpy hook and football references that we’ve previously been introduced to. However, French Montana brings that East coast flavour with a touch of autotune to the palette and rides this afrobeat sound with ease.
Afro B describes his genre of music as Afrowave, a fusion of hip-hop, dancehall and West African sounds. After releasing the catchy ‘Joanna (Drogba)’ track last year, Afro B has been generating a global buzz thanks to the growing popularity of the afrobeat scene. Since it’s release, major industry names such as WizKid, Kuami Eugene and basketball legend turned rapper, Shaquille O’Neal have all jumped on the chance to remix this banger.
Over the past few years, French Montana has been tapping into his global fan base and Arab/African heritage. Last year, he featured on Massari’s remake of the 90s Arab folk song ‘Ya Nour El Ein’ exhibiting his Arabic fluency. His 2017 single ‘Unforgettable’ was set in a village in Uganda and starred the young Ugandan-based dance collective Triplets Ghetto Kids, who also joined him on tour. After the visit, French began to fund the construction of the Suubi Health Centre in the East African nation, which aids 300,000 local citizens. He is the first rapper to be honoured with the prestigious title of Global Citizens Ambassador for his philanthropic efforts.
Make sure to catch Afro B performing at the Afro Nation Festival in Portimão, Portugal this coming August. You can also listen to the official audio of ‘Joanna (Drogba) (Remix)’ below.
