Elton John has once again expressed his admiration for Irish hip-hop trio Kneecap, praising their electrifying energy and politically charged lyricism. The legendary singer-songwriter, known for championing emerging artists, has been vocal about his love for the group, highlighting their unique ability to tackle controversial topics with both power and humour.
Speaking on BBC Radio 6’s Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw, John revealed that a live performance video first piqued his interest in the trio. “I saw a video of them and I was just so knocked out by the energy and vitality they had,” he said. “They were just extraordinary, and what they talk about is political—there aren’t many bands that do that. So, I love them, I love the energy, I love everything about them.”

John’s latest remarks echo the praise he gave Kneecap in September during an episode of his Rocket Hour podcast. Speaking directly to the trio, he commended their fearless approach to addressing difficult topics through their music. “I think you’re very brave to speak out, and you come from a humorous place – and it just makes me happy,” he told them. “Now, you wouldn’t think an old softie like me would be interested in Kneecap, but I am, because the energy, the music, the power – the power, the power. Not many people have that power.”
Elton John has long been known for his unwavering support of new and upcoming musicians. Over the years, he has lent his voice to many artists across various genres, helping to propel their careers forward. Over the weekend, he once again made headlines by performing ‘Pink Pony Club’ alongside Chappell Roan at his Academy Awards viewing party, further showcasing his dedication to the next generation of musicians.
His appreciation for bold and influential music doesn’t stop with hip-hop. John has also expressed admiration for heavy metal giants Metallica, specifically their 1991 hit Nothing Else Matters. In 2021, he described the song as “one of the best songs ever written,” bringing frontman James Hetfield to tears during the interview. That same year, John collaborated with Miley Cyrus and other musicians to cover the track for The Metallica Blacklist compilation album.
Kneecap’s rise has been nothing short of spectacular. Since emerging onto the music scene, the Belfast-based trio has gained recognition for their politically charged lyrics, unapologetic storytelling, and high-energy performances. Their ability to mix humor with hard-hitting social commentary has resonated with audiences far beyond Ireland, securing them a place in the global hip-hop landscape.
Their debut album ‘Fine Art‘, released in June last year, further cemented their status as one of hip-hop’s most exciting new acts. The album received widespread acclaim for its sharp wit and fearless critique of social and political issues, drawing comparisons to some of the genre’s most impactful voices. The album peaked at number 43 in the UK. The band was also recently announced for Glastonbury Festival.
